Waco ISD and the Waco Business League held a grand opening for the Greater Waco Advanced Manufacturing Academy on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at the campus, located at the former site of Doris Miller Elementary School, 2401 J.J. Flewellen Road.

The renovated building is a place where students from Waco ISD and nine surrounding school districts will have an opportunity to learn industrial skills.

The building has been retrofitted with specialized classrooms and state-of-the-art welding stations to accommodate this new and unique partnership between industry and education.

The Academy will introduce students to the world of welding and precision metal manufacturing. It will also teach math and science skills that are mandatory for today's high-tech industrial jobs.

IWDC Member Company, DuPuy Oxygen & Supply Company, sponsored a welding booth, and installed the welding equipment, and shielding gas distribution system in the building.

School districts participating in the academy are Bosqueville, China Spring, Crawford, Connally, Midway, LaVega, Lorena, McGregor, Riesel, Robinson, Waco and Methodist Children’s Home.

Founding business partners are the Waco Business League, University School of Engineering & Computer Science, Capstone Mechanical, Caterpillar, CenTex AGC, Central Texas Iron Works, Elixir Industries, Grainger, Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, Lochridge-Priest, Manitou Group, Matheson Gas, Mazanec Construction, Packaging Corporation of America, SpaceX, Sturdisteel, T-Squared Manufacturing, Texas State Technical College-Waco, Time Manufacturing, Tymco, Vantran, Wallace Group, and Education Service Center Region 12.
